Correlative study of structural and optical properties of ZnSe under severe plastic deformation

The effect of plastic deformation on the optical and structural properties of ZnSe crystals has been investigated. The optical properties have been monitored by cathodoluminescence measurements as a function of the deformation degree. Remarkable differences in the defect-related emissions from the most severely deformed areas have been encountered. Deformation of the crystal lattice of ZnSe, associated with slip phenomena, has been studied by means of Electron Backscattered Diffraction and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The relation between the deformation and the optical properties of the ZnSe crystals has been described.

Abstract Ultrafine grained (UFG) materials are of great potential in industry due to their enhanced mechanical strength and other promising features, such as ability to superplastic deformation or excellent corrosion resistance. Modelling Aspects in Accumulative Roll Bonding Process by Explicit Finite Element Analysis

Accumulative Roll-Bonding (ARB) process is a severe plastic deformation (SPD) process, capable of developing grains below 1 μm in diameter and improving mechanical properties of the material. In this study, the authors compared two different FE-codes with respect of its applicability for numerical analysis of the ARB process. Modelling this process was achieved using the explicit code for Abaqus/CAE both in 2D and 3D. The proposed model was used to assess the impact of ARB cycles on the final material properties. Bonding prediction in friction stir consolidation of aluminum alloys: A preliminary study

Friction Stir Consolidation (FSC) is a solid-state process that results in consolidation of metal powders or chips producing solid billet through severe plastic deformation and the solid-state bonding phenomena. This process can be used both for primary production and for metal scrap recycling. During the FSC process, a rotating die is plunged into a hollow chamber containing the finely divided, unconsolidated material to be processed. In this paper, a FEM numerical model for the prediction of the quality of the consolidated billet is presented. In particular, a dedicated bonding criterion that takes into account the peculiar process mechanics of this innovative technology is proposed.

Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a solid-phase manufacturing process that consolidates metal powder, chips, or scraps into solid blocks via severe plastic deformation and solid state welding. It has the potential to be a more economical and “green” process to recycle metal waste. In this study, solid discs were made from AA6061 aluminum alloy machining chips by FSC. Welding abilities of UFG metals

Ultrafine Grained (UFG) metals are characterized by an average grain size of <1 μm and mostly high angle grain boundaries. These materials exhibit exceptional improvements in strength, superplastic behaviour and in some cases enhanced biocompatibility. UFG metals barstock can be fabricated effectively by means of Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) methods. Experimental investigation of the influence of adhesion on the frictional conditions in the cutting process

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the influence of adhesion on the tribological characteristics of the tool-chip interface. It was established that under orthogonal cutting conditions both the high interface temperature and severe plastic deformation result in relatively strong adhesion between steel and uncoated carbide. The Role of Diffusion Accommodation and Phase Boundary Wetting in the Deformation Behaviour of Ultrafine Grained Sn-Pb Eutectic

Mechanical properties, microstructure of the Sn–38wt. %Pb eutectic and the development of deformation - induced diffusion processes on interphase boundaries (IB) were investigated. Experiments were carried out both in deformed and annealed states of eutectic using micro- and nanoindentation, SEM, AFM and optical microscopy techniques. It was found that the deformation of the annealed alloy is localized at the Pb/Sn interphase boundaries and occurs by grain boundary sliding (GBS) accompanied by sintering micropore processes under the action of the capillary forces on the Pb/Sn IB.
